Best Hot Dog / by Tyler Wood

Solbin's Super Dog

There is no need for a list on this topic, there is only one real contender in this category and that is the infamous Super Dog run by the fifth Sgt.-Pepper-era Beatle - Solbin. But there will be no lonely hearts in this club because there is always a band of fans gathered around this hot dog stand. Settled nicely in a back street near such upscale watering holes as the Ho Bar, Bunker, and the Monkey Beaches, he opens late to feed the drinking masses.

I first stopped by his shop around 4 years ago after a Monkey Beach stint and, at that time, it was just hot dogs wrapped in bacon. Even then, I was hooked and craving it on a late night. It has since become an amalgamation of ingredients from the very mind of a drunk man in the heat of a craving for meat stuffs on a starch of some form or another. He started adding cheese, fries, chicken (yes, on top of a hot dog), and a smorgasbord of condiments. He has since branched out to tacos, rice dishes, and a solid door to his small elbow seating area with the clear view of the master at work on his griddle.

Bacon & Cheese Hot Dog

The hot dogs are all buried deep in the abyss of sauce and topping. I have to show a picture of a half-eaten dog in order for you to even see the hot dog in there. And, yes, those are Doritos sprinkled on the top. It is so messy, it is best eaten with the chop sticks provided unless you want to hit on that girl at the bar with a line of cheese stain running down your new shirt. Filling, fatty, and freakin' delicious - all the things you need after drinking.

Solbin is always a generous host offering drinks to the line of waiting patrons, but waiting is worth it every time at this gem. Not just the best hot dog in Apgujeong, dare I say it, the best hot dog in Korea and that puts it high on the rankings of best late night snack, as well.

If you want to find this place it is just off Rodeo in Apgujeong on Seolleung-ro 157-gil. If it's open, you can't miss it. Don't bother going there if the sun is up, but don't you dare miss it if it's in the middle of the night and you're craving something to eat.
